Robin Uthappa Joins Mumbai Indians as Batting Coach Ahead of IPL 2027

Ahead of the IPL 2027 season, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have made major changes to their coaching staff. Former Indian batsman Robin Uthappa is now the MI Batting Coach. Additionally, former New Zealand paceman Mitchell McClenaghan has returned to MI, and is now the MI Bowling Coach.

T Dilip (former India fielding coach) has joined Uthappa and McClenaghan as MI’s fielding coach. Former India and Mumbai pacer Dhawal Kulkarni is working as MI’s development bowling coach.

The five-time IPL champions are currently reshaping their backroom staff before the upcoming season, and the four individuals appointed to the coaching staff will work with Kieron Pollard, who was just named head coach for the Mumbai Indians after Mahela Jayawardene stepped down.

The replacements have occurred after the departures of bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, along with fielding coach Carl Hopkinson.

Uthappa’s appointment is a homecoming for him as well. He played for the Mumbai Indians during the first season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) back in 2008. In 14 games that year, Uthappa scored 320 runs with a batting average of 30.58 and a strike rate of 114.69.

Following his departure from MI, Uthappa played for numerous other IPL franchises and was instrumental in contributing to the success of two IPL winning teams. Uthappa received the IPL title with Kolkata Knight Riders during the 2014 season and then again during the 2021 season with Chennai Super Kings.

In his IPL career, Robin Uthappa played 205 matches, scoring 4,952 runs. His success as a top-order batsman is likely to be a major factor in improving the batting of the Mumbai Indians, especially their Indian-born players.

Uthappa stated that it was a great feeling to return to the Mumbai Indians as that was the first time that he played for an IPL team. Uthappa has now joined the coaching staff of the same IPL team. Uthappa expressed his interest in helping domestic players develop self-confidence, clarity, and the ability to express themselves freely.

The fast bowler from New Zealand, McClenaghan, is once again joining the Mumbai Indians. During his time with MI (2015-2019), he was able to establish himself as a key part of the team’s bowling unit.

The bowler took 71 wickets during his 56 matches with the club, and he helped the Mumbai Indians win both of their Indian Premier League titles in 2015 and 2019. Now, he’ll use what he knows about the organization and his many years of playing in the T20 format to coach.

The veteran bowler Dhawal Kulkarni is another player who has had a long-term relationship with the Mumbai Indians. The right-arm pacer has been a member of the franchise on-and-off since 2008. After being a part of the MI squad that won its first IPL title in 2013, he returned to the team for both the 2020 and 2021 campaigns. Kulkarni made his international debut in 2014 and has since gone on to represent India in 12 ODI matches and 2 T20I matches.

T Dilip has significant coaching experience to offer the team. He was the former Fielding Coach for India and had been involved with the national team for various international assignments.

The revamped coaching staff at Mumbai Indians will now begin focusing on assembling the team for IPL 2027. One of the main responsibilities that they will face is preparing for the IPL 2027 mini-auction, which is set to occur in Goa on December 16.

With Pollard as the head coach, along with former MI players Uthappa, McClenaghan, and Kulkarni coming back to take on different roles, the franchise is looking to make a much stronger showing during IPL 2027 by combining both familiar faces and experienced individuals.
